Shining Rock Wilderness Hike Info

Meet Up Template

What: Hiking Meet Up

When: Thursday, May 11 2017 @ 9:00 a.m. sharp.

Where: Shining Rock Wilderness, Pisgah National Forest

Directions: Turn off the Blue Ridge Parkway at mile marker 420 onto FS 816 (Black Balsam Road). Drive up Black Balsam Road until you reach the obvious pull-off on the right at the Art Loeb trailhead. If there is no place to park, continue driving ahead to the parking area at Flat Laurel Creek/Little Sam Knob and walk back down to the trailhead.

Description: After departing from the Art Loeb trailhead, we’ll be crossing Black Balsam and Tennent Mountain before entering the Shining Rock Wilderness. From here we’ll hike around Grassy Cove Top through Flower Gap, and to Shining Rock. After leaving Shining Rock, we’ll take the Ivestor Gap Trail which ends at the Sam Knob parking area.

This hike is around 10 miles in length. It is considered strenuous, but only because of the length plus a few areas of elevation gain. Otherwise, it’s not a very difficult trail at all.

Need To Know: This meet up is ONLY for those who’ve indicated via Instagram they’re going.

Because we’ll be hiking into a designated wilderness area, groups are limited to 10 hikers or less. So, this is a “first come, first serve” meet up.

Pets are allowed, but must be leashed at ALL times in accordance with wilderness regulations.

You ares responsible for bringing your own food and water. Be sure to pack enough.

You assume responsibility for your own safety and well-being on the hike. Be safe!

There are no facilities on the hike, except at the Flat Laurel/Little Sam Knob parking area.

Much of the hike is across exposed balds. If the sun is shining, sunscreen should be considered.

This entire hike is above 5,000′, the weather will be cooler and can change suddenly. Pack accordingly.

I will be driving from the Spartanburg area up I-85/I-26 to the Blue Ridge Parkway. I’m more than happy to let you carpool with me. I have space for 3 hikers and their packs. Message me via Instagram @carolinatrekker if you want to carpool (or if you have any other questions).

This will be a great time! See you there!
